Cafe La Scala Italian Restaurant Bar & Cafe offers a genuine slice of Italy right in the heart of Los Altos, CA. Specializing in authentic Italian cuisine, this charming eatery invites diners to indulge in a menu thoughtfully crafted to highlight both familiar favorites and unique delicacies. From the first bite of their freshly baked bread to the last spoonful of mushroom ravioli, each dish promises to captivate the senses with rich, vibrant flavors and artful presentation.
Visitors often praise Cafe La Scala for its inviting yet slightly eclectic ambiance—a "funky Italian" atmosphere that blends warmth with an unexpected modern flair. Inside, the space unfolds beyond initial expectations, featuring a spacious back dining area with a tent-like setup that feels cozy without sacrificing style or comfort. This lively environment creates the perfect backdrop for memorable meals whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch or a celebratory dinner.
Standout dishes include the expertly prepared mushroom ravioli, lauded for its perfect balance of flavors and inviting presentation, and the sea bass, which offers a fresh and rich taste experience, although some guests find it slightly on the saltier side. Pizza lovers shouldn’t miss the Sofia pizza, a crowd-pleaser noted for its well-crafted toppings, although the boldly truffled version may surprise those unaccustomed to such an intense flavor. The drinks menu complements the food beautifully, featuring delicious cocktails and a wine policy that allows you to bring your own bottles without corkage fees for the first two—an excellent touch that encourages guests to personalize their dining experience.
The attentive and friendly service adds to the overall positive impression, with servers renowned for their warmth and professionalism, making you feel genuinely cared for throughout your meal. While some guests mention pricing that leans toward the higher end, many consider the culinary quality and unique setting worth the indulgence.
Sadly, longtime fans have recently bid farewell to Cafe La Scala as it changes hands, marking the end of an era for this beloved Los Altos institution. The heartfelt send-off, complete with complimentary buffet offerings and special discounts, speaks volumes about the bond between the restaurant and its loyal patrons. For those lucky enough to have enjoyed it over the years, Cafe La Scala will be remembered not only for its exceptional food and spirited atmosphere but also for the vibrant community it nurtured.
Nice and funky atmosphere. Bread was tasty and meals were good. Slightly overpriced.
The food is really quite good here. The atmosphere inside is fun and the place is decorated in a funky Italian sort of way. The people are nice, the waiters are great. They have a larger area inside than you would imagine from the street, because they have an area of back that has expanded and kind of a tent-like experience. No matter where they sit you here it is fun and stuff to look at that is kind of funny and amusing. The food is terrific.
Food - Nice menu selection. We ordered a sea bass and mushroom ravioli. The sea bass was fresh but borderline salty. The sauce was smooth and rich with flavors, nearly justifying the $38 price tag of the dish. Mushroom ravioli on the other hand was spot on in terms of taste and the presentation. Being a vegetarian dish, I would have preferred something more like some spinach in the ravioli. Other than that no complaints in the food department. We ordered a triple chocolate mousse for dessert and that was the best mousse I have ever had. Ambience and service - This restaurant is a nice cozy place with exposed bricks on the sides and vibrant lighting. The restaurant staff were amazing - they explained the specials for the day to us, kept checking on us from time to time.
A little rough around the edges but a nice little spot. The service was great, our server was attentive and nice. The food was priced lower than most upscale Italian restaurants and I enjoyed the mushroom ravioli quite a bit. Their Sofia pizza was good, but the truffle was forward. Cocktails were yummy, but there's no corkage fee for your first two bottles of wine, so bring some from home!
My all time favorite restaurant in Los Altos. I went for dinner with my friends last night and was so sad to learn they’ve sold the restaurant and it was their very last night. To honor their customers and run out of the remaining supply they were serving a buffet completely free and all drinks were half off. Everything was amazing as always. I am so sad to see them go
Amazing night with great food and service. I found Cafe La Scala from open table review. The location is not in the Main Street of Los Altos. I’m surprised that I didn’t notice through these years. But the food is delicious! I have the seafood angels hair. The waiter gave us some spice from his garden which is absolutely delicious! My friend was so happy when they brought in the cake to celebrate her birthday. Definitely a hidden gem in Los Altos. Highly recommended.
This unassuming place was such a refreshing treat! The ambience was absolutely lovely. Mains were average but desserts were outstanding. We got the tiramisu and triple chocolate mousse going by all the reviews here. The chocolate mousse was impeccable. Will be coming back for more of the mousse for sure :)
